What’s the History of Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is thought to date back to the third century AD, when marriage was banned by Emperor Claudius II, who didn’t want his soldiers to be married. However, Valentine (later Saint Valentine) defied the Emperor and married people in secret.

When his actions were uncovered, Valentine was sentenced to death, with his execution set to take place on 14th February. While awaiting his fate, he is believed to have fallen in love with the jailer’s daughter, and on 14th February left her with a love letter signed ‘from your Valentine’.

This is the most popular story behind the history of Valentine’s Day; the Romans also had a festival known as Lupercalia in mid-February to mark the beginning of springtime. This eventually became a Christian festival, and it was used to remember St Valentine too.
